The line item that decides everything
Tile is not waterproof. The membrane behind it is. The single most common failure we are called to fix is tile set directly over drywall or green board in a wet area. It looks fine for a year. Then water reaches the substrate, rots the subfloor, and the whole bathroom comes out again.
A bid that is hundreds of dollars cheaper than the rest is often cheaper precisely because it skipped the membrane, the proper slope, or a correctly sized vent fan. You do not see any of that work. You only see the difference when it fails.
